Tax Code protester’s remand in custody extended

On 9 March the Holosiyvsky District Court in Kyiv remanded O. Zaplatkin, a Tax Code protester, for a further month in custody. Another hearing, regarding Serhiy Kostakov who has been in custody since 1 December 2010, accused of damaging a car during the protest, has been postponed

According to Ihor Garkavenko, one of the Tax Code protesters, on 9 March the Holosiyvsky District Court in Kyiv remanded O. Zaplatkin, a Tax Code protester, for a further month.

At a press conference on Friday, Mr Garkavenko also reported that the Pechersky District Court had in recent days postponed the hearing regarding another Tax Code activist, Serhiy Kostakov, with that now scheduled for 18 March.  Mr Kostakov has spent the longest in custody, being arrested on 1 December 2010.  He is accused of damaging a car parked near Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) where the protest against the new Tax Code took place.

On 3 March the Kyiv Court of Appeal allowed Garkavenko’s appeal against the first instance court’s ruling extending his remand in custody on charges of damaging a granite slab during the protest by small business owners against the Tax Code on Maidan Nezalezhnosti. He had begun a hunger strike two days earlier. His lawyers, Oleh Lewytsky from the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union and Artem Belov have stated publicly that the case bore all the hallmarks of political persecution.
