Parliamentarians refuse to defend Tax Code protesters
The Verkhovna Rada has rejected a resolution regarding the violation of the constitutional rights of citizens arrested or detained after the protest on Maidan Nezalezhnosti [Independence Square] over the Tax Code [the Tax Code Maidan]. Only 119 votes were received for the resolution.
Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Lytvyn promised to sign a letter to the Prosecutor General and Ministry of the Interior asking for information about the prosecutions of leaders of the Tax Code Maidan.
Deputy Minister of the Interior, Vasyl Farynnyk, who was present at the parliamentary session, stated that in November last year the police initiated three criminal investigations against Tax Code Maidan protesters.
“One of these was terminated for lack of elements of a crime. In another case where a car was damaged, a person has been prosecuted and that case has been passed to the court under Article 194. The investigators are still looking into one case where 7 people are being prosecuted. One person is in custody. At present we are study this case and will be finished by the end of March”, he said.
