Rivne journalists declare hunger strike in Strasbourg in support of Yury Lutsenko
Serhiy Shturkhetsky, Rivne journalist and Deputy of the Regional Council has declared a hunger strike outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg to demonstrate support for former Minister of Internal Affairs and political leader, Yury Lutsenko, who has been on hunger strike in protest at his continued remand in custody since 22 April. Serhiy Shturkhetsky says that tomorrow he will be joined by three other journalists from Rivne and that they are supported by the French Ukrainian Diaspora. “Our aim is to draw the attention of MEPs to the problems with democracy in Ukraine”. He says that the French often ask him about Tymoshenko and Lutsenko and whether Putinism is possible in Ukraine.
Serhiy Shturkhetsky is the head of the Rivne Independent Media Trade Union and a Deputy of the Regional Council from the Batkivshchyna Party (headed by Yulia Tymoshenko).
While the website of Yury Lutsenko’s party, People’s Self-Defence is reporting the action, Yury Lutsenko’s brother, Serhiy, stresses that the hunger strike is the independent initiative of the Rivne Media Trade Union and that the political party did not organize it.
He names the four journalists as: Serhiy Shturkhetsky, Ivan Chornobai, Roman Zhabchyk and Serhiy Matlach.
