German Government concerned over arrest of Tymoshenko
"The fact that numerous members of the previous government are being investigated for abuse of office awakens a suspicion of politically motivated justice. If this impression is strengthened further, that would be a significant hurdle to Ukraine moving closer to the European Union..."
Germany’s Deputy Foreign Minister Werner Hoyer has expressed "great concern" over the arrest of former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Batkivshchyna Party, Yulia Tymoshenko and said that there are doubts as to whether such a step was proportionate.
"The fact that numerous members of the previous government are being investigated for abuse of office awakens a suspicion of politically motivated justice. If this impression is strengthened further, that would be a significant hurdle to Ukraine moving closer to the European Union. Ukraine’s government must guarantee that the trial will be fair and in keeping with the norms of a law-based country, and also promote an independent and apolitical system of justice”.
