Jose Manuel Pintu Teisheira, Head of the European Commission Representation in Ukraine has warned that possible impediment by the authorities to participation by the opposition in the 2012 parliamentary elections would cast doubt over their outcome.

“If the most popular opposition politician who lost the presidential campaign by a small margin, or other opponents of the regime, cannot take part in the following elections to the Verkhovna Rada, this will cast doubt over their results”, Jose Manuel Pintu Teisheira told “Delovaya stolitsa” [“Business Capital”).

Andrew Wilson, Senior Political Analyst for the EU on International Affairs believes that the parliamentary elections without the participation of Yulia Tymoshenko will be meaningless.  He said that surveys clearly demonstrate that Yulia Tymoshenko is at present the leader of the opposition in the country. Mr Wilson also said that the arrest on the eve of elections of such a contender as Tymoshenko did not comply with the European understanding of politics and expressed doubt that without her any political force would be able to function fully.

Ukraine’s legislation prohibits people convicted of a crime from standing for electoral office.
