PACE Co-Rapporteurs prevented from seeing Yulia Tymoshenko

Mailis Reps and Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin, Co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Ukraine by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), have expressed concern at being refused permission to visit former Prime Minister and opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko who has been held in the Kachanivska Prison Colony since late December 2011.  Ukraine  The refusal, formally from the State Penitentiary Service, is especially ironical given that the co-rapporteurs have come to Ukraine in order to “assess the follow-up given to Assembly Resolution 1862 (2012) on “the functioning of democratic institutions in Ukraine”, passed in January”. This expressed very strong concern over evidence of selective prosecution of opposition figures, and spoke for the first time of sanctions if the present situation is not resolved.

The refusal was reported on the parliamentary website which also reports Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Lytvyn as saying that the government is “working on implementation” of this PACE resolution.
