This followed the Foreign Minister’s statement that “Ukraine can do whatever it wants and even disregard resolutions or recommendations of the Committee (of the Council of Europe”

At a press conference on Thursday, Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin, Co-rapporteur  for the monitoring of Ukraine by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) said that she had been shocked by Foreign Minister Hryshchenko’s position and the way in which he expressed it.  He “expressed the opinion that, in fact, Ukraine can do whatever it wants and even disregard resolutions or recommendations of the Committee (of the Council of Europe), " She added that it was especially unexpected given that “a different vision of the situation “ had been put forward by other officials.  Mr Hryshchenko’s stand had, she said, overshadowed the entire visit.

On Thursday, the two Co-rapporteurs - Ms de Pourbaix-Lundin and Mailis Reps were allowed a meeting with imprisoned opposition figure and former Minister of the Interior Yury Lutsenko.

“Noting the concerns about his health, the co-rapporteurs called on the authorities to provide all necessary expertise to properly diagnose and treat his illness.

The co-rapporteurs expressed their will to continue searching for a solution for the former government members who have been detained and whose trials have been a matter of great concern for the Parliamentary Assembly, as expressed in Resolution 1862 (2012) on “the functioning of democratic institutions in Ukraine”, passed in January.” (from the report of the visit on the PACE site)

The website of Lutsenko’s party, People’s Self-Defence reports that the meeting lasted around 2 hours.  Iryna Lutsenko reports that her husband suggested that the Co-rapporteurs visit his new cell which he had only just been moved to, supposedly because the other was to undergo repairs.  He said that they had refused, knowing that they would be showed something put on for their benefit.
