Local EU Statement in Ukraine on the ECHR judgment in the case Lutsenko v Ukraine (04/07/2012)

The European Union Delegation issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Kyiv:

"Yesterday’s judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Lutsenko v. Ukraine confirms the concerns consistently expressed by the EU about the need to apply systematically the Rule of Law and about politically motivated trials in Ukraine.

The EU Delegation calls on the Ukrainian authorities to take urgent steps to remedy the systemic procedural shortcomings identified in this ruling. The EU Delegation once again urges the Ukrainian authorities to respect fully the Rule of Law including the independence of the judiciary."
