Local EU Statement on the Verdict of the Appeal Court in the case of Valery Ivaschenko in Ukraine (15/08/2012)

The European Union Delegation has issued the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Ukraine

The EU Delegation to Ukraine has noted the verdict of the Court of Appeal in the case of Valery Ivaschenko, freeing him from prison under a now suspended sentence due to be appealed by the defence.

The Delegation takes note of the release of Mr Ivaschenko after nearly two years in detention, during which his health condition deteriorated. This is therefore an important humanitarian development. The Delegation also notes the valuable role played by former President Kwasniewski and former President Cox, on behalf of the European Parliament, in observing proceedings.

The Delegation reiterates its concern on rule of law and the central importance which the European Union attaches to reforming the justice system in Ukraine, and the European Union’s commitment to monitor closely a number of other ongoing judicial processes, including those concerning former Prime Minister Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Lutsenko.
