Russian language declared „regional” in Kharkv

Odessa, Zaporizhya, Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson oblasts have adopted similar decisions since President Yanukovych signed the controversial language bill into law

  The Kharkiv City Council has voted, on the basis of the controversial language law which President Yanukovych signed on 8 August, to make Russian a regional language. The proposal was voted for by 76 out of the 80 deputies registered.  The opposition Batkivshchyna Party did not vote, leaving in protest.

There were pickets outside in protest., involving around 100 protesters from Batkivshchyna and the rightwing VO Svoboda party. The protesters tried to force their way into the City Council building but were stopped by police with some scuffles.

This is the second time that Kharkiv has declared Russian a regional language, the first being on 6 March 2006.

Odessa, Zaporizhya, Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson oblasts have adopted similar dicisions.
