“If we can’t win the elections with those rules, we’ll just change them”

Iryna Bekeshkina, renowned sociologist and Director of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, says that those in power clearly showed at the parliamentary elections that they cannot play by the rules.

“The elections clearly showed that this regime cannot play by the rules and has no intention of doing so. Therefore, if it turns out that they can’t win according to the rules, then the rules need to be changed. According to the law in place it was clearly entirely possible that the Party of the Regions would lose according to the proportional system. So the law needed to be changed which was done.”

Ms Bekeshkina added that those currently in power work on the principle “If the rules don’t suit us, they need to be changed so that we can win”.

“And if you can’t win according to the changed rules, then you need to simply play without rules. What happened several days after the elections can be called a flagrant game without any rules which simply shocked all of Europe”.

She said that international observers had been shocked by what was going on at polling stations, and that from their conversations, as well as the foreign press, shock is the word which comes across.
