The UNIAN information agency reports their source as saying that doctors in the Chernihiv Regional Hospital do not exclude the possibility that imprisoned former Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko may undergo an operation.  The source within the hospital told UNIAN that Mr Lutsenko will remain in the hospital for at least a few more days.

Yury Lutsenko was taken from the Mensk Prison Colony to the gastroenterology department of the Chernihiv Regional Hospital on 3 December.  According to a spokesperson from Lutsenko’s Narodna Samooborona Party, at present only examination is involved, no treatment.

Iryna Lutsenko, the imprisoned politician’s wife, says that her husband’s state is very bad and that as well as other illnessness, “a very serious intestinal illness is suspected”.

Illnesses named earlier have included cyrrhosis of the liver, varicose veins, peptic ulcers and hepatitis.

Yury Lutsenko is serving a four-year sentence which has been condemned by all democratic countries as politically motivated.
