The Chernivtsi Regional Court of Appeal has issued a ban on peaceful rallies aimed to coincide with a Ukrainian – Russian Interstate Commission meeting chaired by Leonid Kozhara, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
The arguments given by the court, according to a representative of the VO Svoboda Party are at once highly telling and, unfortunately, standard. The ban, it ruled, was needed to avoid confrontation and because the police could not guarantee law and order. It covers rallies and other events on 13 January.
The application for a ban was lodged by the Chernivtsi City Council.
