Kwaśniewski - Cox Mission: More questions than answers

Observers in Ukraine and at least one MEP, Rebekka Harms, do not see the visit by European Parliament’s Delegation to Ukraine as having in any way brought resolution of the problem with political prisoners.closer.   

On Tuesday the heads of the European Parliament’s Special Commission – former Polish President Kwaśniewski and former EP President Cox – spent a few hours with imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.  They had met on Monday with imprisoned ex-Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko. 

They also had a meeting with former President Leonid Kuchma. 

According to their observer mandate, the two men did not speak with the press.

Political analyst Oleksy Haran is skeptical about upbeat predictions made by Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara that the EU-Urraine Association Agreement could be signed this year.  He believes that rather than making progress, Kyiv is regressing with this evidenced by the latest allegations against Yulia Tymoshenko of ordering the killing of Eugene Shcherban in 1996, as well as the deterioration in Yury Lutsenko’s conditions in prison. He suggests that all of this places it doubtful that the Association Agreement can be signed.
