Analyst: Ukraine’s future in Yanukovych’s hands

"For Ukraine the Vilnius Summit has historic significance.  The country’s foreign orientation and its internal development depend on whether or not the Association Agreement is signed.

If President Yanukovych letsYulia Tymoshenko go to Germany without any conditions, the Association Agreement will without any doubt be signed on 28-29 November 2013 by the heads of all 28 EU countries and governments. This signing will open the gates on Ukraine’s path to Europe.

If President Yanukovych does not release Tymoshenko by 28-29 November, he will be seriously risking that as a result of his intransigence, even European governments with a positive attitude to Ukraine will not be willing to sign the Agreement. If the Agreement is not signed in Vilnius, Moscow and Ukrainian supporters of a “Eurasian choice” will gain the chance to derail Ukraine’s movement to Brussels or to even force it to career backwards, towards Eurasia. That would be a hard blow for the European Union, but for Ukraine the non-signing of the Agreement will really be a fateful blow. At this historic moment Ukraine’s fate is in the hands of Ukraine’s President Yanukovych."
