Tabachnyk threatens to take away protesters’ student grant

Dmytro Tabachnyk, Education Minister has said that students are obliged to go to lectures in order to receive their student grant, but may use their time after 15.00 as they please.

He had been asked if the ministry would be reacting in any way to the large number of students who are not attending lectures in order to take part in EuroMaidan.  His response was more wordy, but the essence was as above.

Ukraininska Pravda reported on Wednesday evening that ministers were being sent to higher educational institutes “to calm down the students”.

On Tuesday, Tabachnyk called on all students to not succumb to provocation from “hotheads” and claimed that European standards were a priority in educational reform in Ukraine.

A very large number of students from Kyiv, Lviv, Uzhhorod, Ivano-Frankivsk  and other cities have joined in the EuroMaidan protests against the government’s decision to suspend preparations for signing the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
