Ukrainian officer taken captive in Crimea released

Captain Viacheslav Demyanenko was taken prisoner by the Russian military on March 23.

Oleksandr Turchynov, Ukraine’s acting president has reported the release of Captain Viacheslav Demyanenko who was taken prisoner by the Russian military on March 23.  He said that Demyanenko should arrive in Kyiv on Thursday. As reported, the young officer’s family had approached both the Foreign and Defence Ministries for help in getting him released.  His mother explained that Demyanenko was taken captive during an attack on military unit A 4398 on March 23. He was reported to be at the Russian military headquarters and there were suggestions that he was in the hands of Russia’s security service, the FSB.

Turchynov stated on Wednesday that slightly less than 50% of Ukraine’s military personnel in the Crimea had been evacuated (1059 soldiers) with around 1500 remaining.  He said that at present Ukraine is working to get all military technology returned, including military ships.
