“Freedom House”: the freedom of speech is absent in Ukraine

The organization "Freedom House" published its report on the freedom of speech in Ukraine. The rating of Ukraine and Venezuela has essentially decreased in comparison with the previous report. She got to the category of "not free" countries, that is the countries, where the freedom of speech is completely absent.
Kuchma again got to the list of enemies of the press

The organization "Reporters without frontiers" published their annual report on the state of the freedom of the press in 2002 in 156 countries and the list of 42 main enemies of the press. President Leonid Kuchma was included to this list again.

The European Court acknowledged the violations of rights of the Ukrainians condemned to death penalty

The European Court of human rights got the complaints from six Ukrainian condemned, for whom the death penalty was replaced with life imprisonment after Ukraine abolished the capital punishment. The Court acknowledged that the rights of prisoners were violated and obliged the Ukrainian state to pay the compensations from 1 to 3 thousand Euro to the six claimants. Besides, the Court must oblige Ukrainian authorities to improve the operating laws and court practices.
The claims of six Ukrainians were partially satisfied by the European Court of human rights (Volodymir Yavorskiy).

On 7 April the Cherkassy appeal court confirmed the legality of the decision issued by the Uman town court on the claim of MP Petro Kuzmenko against the newspaper "Vulyk". The editorial board of the newspaper is going to turn to the Supreme Court.

The three-day preventive strike of the opposition finished in Odessa. The participants demanded to cancel the decision on the increase of the tariffs for communal services, to resume the round-the-clock provision of hot water and to dismiss city mayor. The city authorities refused to comment this action.
Journalists got the proposition to abandon pseudonyms.

In the evening of 11 April in Simferopol two strangers brutally beat Aleksey Ermolin, a correspondent of the Crimean informational-analytical weekly "Krymskie novosti". The collective of the editorial board does not exclude the version that the attack was provoked by Ermolins professional activities.
