Meeting in memory of the Victims of Beslan banned in Moscow

31 August 2006  The Moscow authorities have prohibited human rights groups from holding a rally in memory of the Victims of Beslan which was planned for 3 September, the second anniversary of the siege of the school by terrorists.

Director of the human rights organization “Civic Assistance Committee” Svetlana Gannushkina believes that the authorities don’t want to attract attention on the Day of the City to the anniversary since those really responsible for the tragedy have not been named.

As a result of the siege (which began on 1 September) and the subsequent storming of the school in Beslan on 3 September 2004, more than 300 people, very many of them children, were killed.
