Strasbourg to examine the case of a Russian pensioner unlawfully detained during a protest march
The European Court of Human Rights has registered an application lodged by the Russian Interregional Committee against Torture on behalf of a Nizhny Novgorod pensioner, seventy-year-old Lilia Gremina. She accuses the police of violent treatment and unlawful detention on 24 March 2007 during a March of those in dissent [Marsh nyesoglasnykh]
Ms Gremina turned to the Committee against Torture requesting that a public investigation be held. The Committee heeded her call and found that the actions of the police as seen in the elderly ladys unlawful and unjustified detention and use of force against her had been rough, not in keeping with the principles and tasks of law enforcement and had degraded an elderly lady.
