Jerzy Buzek: Tymoshenko sentence "politically motivated"

The seven-year jail sentence imposed on Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was a "politically-motivated act" and a case of "selective application of the law" Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, has said. He stressed that proper application of the law is a prerequisite for any EU-Ukraine co-operation agreement.

Mr Buzek was opening a plenary session of the European Parliament where Tuesday’s sentencing of Yulia Tymoshenko to 7 years imprisonment was to be discussed.

He noted that the news of the verdict was met with "great regret, " and again said that he was concerned about a politically motivated decision, which, in his opinion, "demonstrates the selective application of the law in this country."

"We are concerned about the independence and transparency of the judicial system, the proper functioning of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary in general, which are a prerequisite for the signing of the association agreement by the end of this year. I’m calling on the Ukrainian authorities to respect the principles and values that underpin our relations in a spirit of Eastern Partnership, " he said.
