Demand for reinstatement of Ukrainian channels in Crimea
The State TV and Radio Broadcasting Committee has condemned the removal from Crimean broadcasting channels of virtually all Ukrainian national TV channels and unlawful transfer of the frequencies to Russian channels. †It calls the move a demonstration of information aggression against Ukraine by the Russian Federation. †It calls the move a flagrant violation of Crimean residentsí right to information, a right enshrined in Ukraineís Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.
As reported, since Feb 27 there has been a massive offensive waged against freedom of information in the Crimea, with measures taken to silence Ukrainian channels.
The first seizures of the premises of the state-owned AR Krym; TRC Sevastopol and others was carried out on Feb 28 by fully armed men in military uniforms without insignia. †Part of the broadcasting equipment was damaged as a result.
On March 3 armed individuals demanded that all state channels be switched off and that other unknown channels be added. †One of the two main channels in the Crimea Ė TV Chornomorska was cut off with the frequencies handed over to Rossiya 24.
On March 6 armed men appeared at the Simferopol TV transmission station †with representatives from Russian channels and demanded that they be given the frequencies.
By March 9 virtually all Ukrainian television channels had been removed from air with their frequencies occupied by the Russian channels ORT; Rossiya 1; Rossiya 24; NTV; TNT and STS.
TRC Krym is now under the control of the puppet government in the Crimea headed by Sergei Aksenov.
On March 10 in Simferopol digital broadcasting of Ukrainian channels was cut off with their frequencies now broadcasting Russian channels.
