Kremlin-backed militants seize parents of a local journalist
Donetsk journalist Viktoria Ishchenko reports that her parents have been seized by members of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. Iryna and Valery Ishchenko are accusd of “complicity”, though complicity in what is not clear.
The journalist received a call at 15.40 on Aug 9 from her mother who said that some terrorists had arrived and were looking for her. Viktoria Ishchenko has been in Kyiv for several months now, but previously worked for a Ukrainian language website in Donetsk. Her mother therefore said that Viktoria was not there and didn’t open the doors. The militants said that they would return and break down the door.
Since then all contact with her parents was broken. Viktoria has learned from neighbours that the militants did return, looked for something in the flat, took her parents away, as well as a computer and some other technology. They claimed that they were ‘arresting’ them for a day or two, however that was three days ago.
