16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women begin in Ukraine

The action 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women is run with the support of the United Nations throughout the entire world.  From 25 November to 10 December rights organizations in different countries will be taking part in activities aimed at drawing attention to violence against women. The action is timed to end with the celebrations to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

In Ukraine the action “16 Days against Gender Violence” was initiated by the UN Mission in Ukraine and the Ministry for the Family, Youth and Sport.

According to UN figures, every year up to 2 million women and children are victims of violence, slavery and forced prostitution.  These trends are also seen in Ukraine. The Minister for the Family, Youth and Sport, Yury Pavlenko states that every third Ukrainian woman has suffered from physical or psychological ill-treatment. He explains that 22 centres have been created in the regions providing psychological aid, and that these are used by around 1500 women a year. “One person may need a bed, another – legal aid, while a third person is in need of psychological support”.  The Minister added that the number of cases of violence, depression and suicide has increased due to a worsening in socio-economic conditions.
