Ivashchenko: Detention once again extended and hearings postponed

20.08.2011
The former Acting Minister of Defence in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government has now been in detention for a year. His case is one of those examined and criticized in the latest report by the Danish Helsinki Committee on Human Rights

The Pechersky District Court in Kyiv has rejected the latest application by former Acting Minister of Defence in Yulia Tymoshenko’s government, Valery Ivashchenko for his restraint measure to be changed from remand in custody.  Judge Serhiy Vovk, who is also presiding over the trial of former Minister of Internal Affairs Yury Lutsenko also refused the application for Ivashchenko to not have to sit in the defendant’s cage during the hearings.  Vovk said that the court did not have jurisdiction to decide this.

The court then declared a break until 20 September due to its workload.

Valery Ivashchenko has now been in detention for one year. A criminal investigation was announced by a prosecutor from the Prosecutor General’s Office on 20 August 2010 and he was remanded in custody. The investigation was completed on 1 November 2010.

Ivashchenko is charged with having, in November 2009 while Acting Minister of Defence abused his position by signing a plan to sell the Feodosia Marine Engineering Works which was property of the Ministry of Defence.

Please see the Second Preliminary Report by the Danish Helsinki Committee on Human Rights, where Valery Ivashchenko’s case is one of those examined.
