No hockey propaganda points for Belarusian dictator!

The following letter will be sent to the International Hockey Federation at the end of this week. Please write to [email protected] (writing Belarus or Hockey in the title) if you would like to add your voice
Dear Members of the International Ice Hockey Federation,
We are writing in support of the call made by Peter Stastny, renowned hockey star and Member of the European Parliament, and would respectfully ask you to relocate the 2014 Ice Hockey Championship from Minsk, Belarus. This call, endorsed by both the US Congress and European Parliament is forced on us by the continuing grave abuse of human rights and repressionunder the regime of Alexander Lukashenka.
Belarusians are being denied their most fundamental rights, including the right to life itself. Alexander Lukashenka recently flouted pleas from all democratic countries and international bodies and refused to pardon two young men, Uladzislau Kavalyou and Dzmitry Kanavalau. They were executed after a seriously flawed trial which had never satisfactorily proved the men’s guilt.
There are grounds for concern over the state of health of two political prisoners: Syarhey Kavalenka and Dzmitry Bandarenka. They are only two of a large number of people imprisoned for defending the democratic rights which you and we believe fundamental and inalienable.
Lukashenka himself is a known fan of the sport and is clearly hoping for propaganda value from the Championship. We are sure you will agree that hockey and your Federation must not be used in this way.
A decision by the International Hockey Federation to relocate the Championship from Minsk until the regime releases all the country’s political prisoners and issues a moratorium on the death penalty will send a vital message to Lukashenka and his regime.
It will be heard by all those in the post-Soviet realm who believe they can flout human rights and repress their citizens with impunity.

В поддержку инициативы Петера Штястного, знаменитого хоккеиста и депутата Европейского парламента, мы обращаемся к Вам с просьбой перенести Чемпионат мира по хоккею 2014 году из Минска в другую страну. Нас, как и конгресс США и Европейский Парламент, вынуждают к такому призыву серьёзные нарушения прав человека и непрекращающиеся репрессии режима Александра Лукашенко.
В Беларуси массово нарушаются самые фундаментальные права человека, в том числе и право на жизнь. Лукашенко недавно проигнорировал призывы со стороны всех демократических государств и международных структур и отказался помиловать Владислава Ковалева и Дмитрия Коновалова. Их казнили несмотря на вопиющие нарушения их права на справедливый суд и обоснованные сомнения относительно их вины.
Вызывает обеспокоенность состояние здоровья, по меньшей мере, двух политзаключённых – Сергея Коваленко и Дмитрия Бондаренко. Это только двое из многих людей, приговорённых к тюремному заключению за отстаивание тех прав и свобод, которые мы с Вами считаем неотъемлемыми.
Известно, что Лукашенко - большой любитель хоккея и явно рассчитывает на пропагандистские дивиденды от чемпионата. Мы не сомневаемся, что Вы не хотели бы, чтобы хоккей вообще, и Ваш чемпионат в частности, использовали в таких целях.
Решение Международной федерации хоккея отказаться от проведения Чемпионата мира по хоккею в Минске, пока Александр Лукашенко не отпустит всех политзаключённых и не введёт мораторий на смертную казнь, даст очень важный сигнал режиму Лукашенко.
Тот сигнал заметят и другие лидеры постсоветских республик, которые пока считают, что могут безнаказанно преследовать и нарушать права и свобод своих граждан.
