Russian language declared „regional” in Kharkv
The Kharkiv City Council has voted, on the basis of the controversial language law which President Yanukovych signed on 8 August, to make Russian a regional language. The proposal was voted for by 76 out of the 80 deputies registered. The opposition Batkivshchyna Party did not vote, leaving in protest.
There were pickets outside in protest., involving around 100 protesters from Batkivshchyna and the rightwing VO Svoboda party. The protesters tried to force their way into the City Council building but were stopped by police with some scuffles.
