Our letters help keep Russia’s Ukrainian political prisoners out of danger
26.12.2017
Moscow is holding over 60 Ukrainian political prisoners in occupied Crimea and Russia, with many. like Oleg Sentsov and Ruslan Zeytullaev, held thousands of kilometres from their children. Every letter sent to them is “a breath of freedom”, civic activists stress. It is also an important message to the Kremlin that the men are not forgotten, with this having very direct impact on their treatment.

FSB terrorize, arrest and even jail the elderly in Russian-occupied Crimea
26.12.2017
An exiled member of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis [representative assembly] has issued an angry statement after his elderly parents became the latest target of the FSB in Russian-occupied Crimea. The summoning of Eskender Bariev’s 84-year-old father, 79-year-old mother and other close relatives for interrogation comes less than a month after an extraordinary attempt to arrest 83-year-old Vedzhie Kashka led to the death of that internationally renowned veteran of the Crimean Tatar national movement

Ukraine’s ex-Prime Minister briefly detained as Russia continues its “most falsified Ukrainian political trial”
24.12.2017
Arseny Yatsenyuk was stopped at Geneva Airport on the evening of December 23 because of an ‘arrest warrant’ issued by Russia against the former Ukrainian Prime Minister. The charges of having fought against Russian federal forces in Chechnya 23 years ago are absurd but cost the ex-PM and his daughter a mere ten minutes of their time. Incomparably less than the price paid by Stanislav Klykh and Mykola Karpyuk, the real two victims of what has been called “Russia’s most monstrously falsified trial of Ukrainian citizens since it’s annexation of Crimea”.
Suspended sentence for the savage murder of Maidan journalist Viacheslav Veremiy
23.12.2017
The first and only trial so far over the fatal attack on journalist Viacheslav Veremiy during Euromaidan has ended in a four-year suspended sentence with a two-year probation period passed on Yury Krysin for his undisputed part in the killing. Judge Oleh Linnyk from the Shevchenkivsk Court in Kyiv, ignored the prosecutor’s call for a six-year prison sentence, and found him guilty only of ‘hooliganism’, with his alleged repentance and two underage children given as mitigating circumstances.

Chilling details of how Russia-backed Donbas ‘republic’ instills terror
22.12.2017
The Kremlin-backed ‘Donetsk people’s republic’ [DPR] has finally admitted to holding a Donetsk doctor and her husband prisoner almost two months after their disappearance led to a major search campaign. Now those who took part in looking for the couple are feeling terrified that they too could be seized and face 12-20-year ‘sentences’ on surreal spying charges.
Putin rival Sobchak defends Crimean Tatar activist on trial for saying, like her, that Crimea Is Ukraine
22.12.2017
The ‘trial’ has begun in Russian-occupied Crimea of Suleyman Kadyrov who is facing a possible 5-year sentence for a Facebook comment stating that Crimea is Ukraine – just like Russian presidential candidate Ksenya Sobchak who has spoken out in Kadyrov’s defence

Ukraine’s Oligarchs Still Control the Media. Will Anyone Ever Challenge Them?
22.12.2017
There’s an effort underway to put a public broadcaster in place. While the government has adopted legislation to create the first-ever public broadcaster, it has encountered numerous problems, namely funding and independence.

21.12.2017
Roman Sushchenko has been honoured ‘For Courage’ by the Andrei Sakharov Committee on Journalism as an Act of Conscience. The Ukrainian journalist has been illegally held in Russia for the last 14 months, with the FSB using various forms of pressure to get him to ‘confess’ to fictitious ‘spying’.

20.12.2017
The UN General Assembly has passed a vital resolution on the human rights situation in Crimea which recognizes that Russia’s illegal occupation is an international armed conflict and gives victims of abuse wider scope to defend their rights. Ukrainian human rights organizations played a major role in drawing up the document which refers to binding international law and covers abuse that had previously received too little attention.

Mounting concern over Ukraines imprisonment of Zhytomyr journalist Vasyl Muravytsky
20.12.2017
As feared, the charges of state treason brought against Vasyl Muravytsky appear to be based on no more than the blogger and journalist’s highly contentious statements and a contract of employment concluded with ‘Russia Today’. Whatever we may think of this Russian state-funded propaganda machine and Muravytsky’s views, much more seems needed to warrant the criminal charges he is facing.
Russia confirms ban on independent journalists & freedom of speech in occupied Crimea
19.12.2017
The High Court in Russian-occupied Crimea has upheld the two and a half year suspended sentence passed on 67-year-old Ukrainian journalist Mykola Semena for expressing the position of the UN, EU, Council of Europe and international community regarding Russia’s occupation of Crimea.
