Israeli government report invents sharp rise in anti-Semitism in Ukraine
01.02.2018
A report on anti-Semitism by the Israeli Ministry for Diaspora Affairs has come up with some statistics about anti-Semitism in Ukraine which would be alarming if they had any basis in fact. According to Vyacheslav Likhachev, who has been systematically monitoring anti-Semitism and xenophobia in Ukraine for well over 10 years, they have little or none.
Crimean journalist & politician jailed on ‘extortion’ charges for criticism of United Russia party
31.01.2018
The ‘trial’ in Russian-occupied Crimea of journalist Alexei Nazimov and politician Pavel Stepanchenko is descending into farce, after never really making much sense. This has not prevented the two men being held in detention since October 2016, and the lack of any substance to the charges may well have no impact upon the eventual verdict.

Ukrainian court keeps putting off trial over Russian human trafficking scam
31.01.2018
Kyiv judges seem very uninterested in moving forward in an important trial of suspected ‘recruiters’ for fake jobs in Russia, one of the scams that may have been used to force Ukrainians to fight in Donbas or Syria. As with most human trafficking trials it can be hard to get people to come forward, but why the court is dragging its heels is less easy to understand . .
Yes, Ukraine’s Oligarchs Own the Airwaves, but Their Days Are Numbered
31.01.2018
Oligarchs own the airwaves in Ukraine. More than 75 percent of Ukrainians regularly watch TV channels owned by Ukrainian oligarchs Viktor Pinchuk, Ihor Kolomoisky, Dmytro Firtash, and Rinat Akhmetov. But this is hardly news since TV serves as the primary source of information for 58 percent of Ukrainians.
Far-right vigilantes imposing ‘Ukrainian order’ are strange partners for Ukraine’s National Police
30.01.2018
So-called ‘National Militia Units’ are promising to ’establish Ukrainian order” on the streets of Kyiv, seemingly in cooperation with Ukraine’s National Police. Assurances from the Interior Ministry cannot allay concerns about police collaboration with an organization which has on many occasions demonstrated intolerance towards ethnic minorities, as well as to people whose sexual orientation, political or other beliefs they view with antagonism.

Crimean Tatar on trial for not betraying his oath of allegiance to Ukraine
29.01.2018
How do you flesh out the ‘trial’ of a Ukrainian prosecuted by the Russian occupiers of his homeland for writing on Facebook that ‘Crimea always was, and remains Ukrainian”? A Russian-controlled prosecutor and court in occupied Crimea are trying to find something sensible to add to this grotesque ‘trial’ of Crimean Tatar activist Suleyman Kadyrov and failing badly.

Anti-corruption groups question motives for prosecution of YouControl open access firm
29.01.2018
A number of Ukrainian anti-corruption NGOs, including Transparency International in Ukraine, have expressed concern over the criminal proceedings against YouControl and its founder Serhiy Milman which they view as pressure on an open access firm providing invaluable assistance to anti-corruption campaigners and journalists.
Russia deploys armed police and dogs in new offensive against Crimean Solidarity
28.01.2018
In the latest attack on the Crimean Solidarity civic initiative, a huge contingent of Russian OMON riot police have disrupted the monthly meeting held to discuss ways of helping political prisoners and their families. There was no real attempt to come up with a credible reason for what was clearly an attempt at intimidation - one that follows the arrests of several Crimea Solidarity activists on trumped-up charges.

Russian captured fighting for Donbas militants in Ukraine gets 10-year sentence on terrorism charges
26.01.2018
A court in the Luhansk oblast has convicted a 22-year-old Russian national Victor Ageyev on terrorism charges for fighting on the side of Kremlin-backed militants, and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment. The indictment mentioned nothing about Ageyev being a Russian contract soldier, despite the man himself and his mother having confirmed this after his capture, as well as other substantiating evidence.
Crimean Tatar with brain tumour arrested for social media post from 2012
26.01.2018
Russia’s overt terrorization in occupied Crimea continued on January 25 with two more armed searches. The targets this time included Ebazer Islyamov from Nizhnegorsk, who was detained and then put through a court hearing despite all those responsible being informed that he has a brain tumour. An armed search was also carried out of the home of Crimean Tatar activist Enver Krosh in Dzhankoj, who was subjected to torture two years ago after refusing to collaborate with Russia’s FSB

What Lavrov’s Lies Mean for Ukraine
26.01.2018
Voltaire reportedly said that those who can persuade one to believe absurdities will lead one to commit atrocities. In contemporary politics Russia’s stance on Ukraine represents a cardinal example of the enduring validity of his remark.
Another chilling abduction by Kremlin-backed Luhansk militants
25.01.2018
News has emerged of another woman abducted in the self-proclaimed ‘Luhansk people’s republic’ [‘LPR’] , and probably now held by its sinister ‘ministry of state security’. The information cannot be verified, but the official denials have been heard too many times before to have any credibility, whereas those reporting such enforced disappearances are taking a risk in doing so.
Crimean Tatar detained, tortured and charged with ‘inciting enmity to Russians’
25.01.2018
A Russian-controlled ‘court’ in Crimea has remanded Ismail Ramazanov in custody for a month after refusing to react to the young man’s acute pain from the beating he endured in police custody. Ramazanov is accused of ‘extremism’ over comments he allegedly made to an Internet radio station.
