Opposition march clashes with police

Scuffles broke out after the thousand-strong protest procession were stopped by two rows of police from marching along Volodymyrska St in order to take a memorandum with demands to the President’s Administration.

Rivne Court orders dismantling of protesters’ tents

The court thus acceded to the application of the Mayor of Rivne and ordered the tents erected by the Rinve Regional Committee against Dictatorship to be dismantled for the period from 23 to 29 August,. This covers Independence Day and President Yanukovych’s planned visit to the city

The Simferopol Local Court has banned a flash mob planned on Monday near the Crimean Council of Ministers citing the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 28 July 1988 in justification on this new restriction on peaceful assembly

According to Yulia Tymoshenko’s Batkivshchyna Party, 20 tents erected by Batkivshchyna were dismantled on Friday evening following a ruling from the Dnipropetrovsk District Administrative Court.

Gorky Park defenders beaten and hospitalized

There was an escalation in violence on 2 August at Kharkiv’s Gorky Park where activists are trying to prevent new tree felling which is being carried out without any permits, public discussion etc. Loggers and the so-called “municipal guards” beat up 5 of the Park’s defenders, two of whom received serious injuries

Horokhiv police officers detained five men and held them in a police station for five hours, insulting them, taking their fingerprints. If this were not enough, the head of the police station even tried to hit one of them.

Reports are coming in that after the illegal felling of over two thousand trees in Kharkiv’s Gorky Park and brutal suppression of peaceful protest in May and early June 2010, attempts are again underway to destroy more of the Park. The Court of Appeal in July returned the criminal case over alleged damage to the granite stone on Maidan Nezalezhnosti [Independence Square] in the centre of Kyiv during the demonstrations against the draft Tax Code late last year to the Shevchenkivsky District Court in Kyiv
