Freedom House: The False Promise of Populism
05.04.2017
Populists’ stunning electoral victories in Europe and the United States have shaken the post–Cold War order in Europe and Eurasia, but they could ultimately reinvigorate liberal democracy.
Arrest warrant on ex-Ukrainian PM culminates Russia’s most cynical torture-based political trial
31.03.2017
A Russian court has issued an ‘arrest warrant’ on ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk, claiming that he was placed on the international wanted list on Feb 21, 2017. There is no evidence that Interpol knows it is supposed to be looking for Yatsenyuk, and every reason to assume they would refuse to do so.
Killing of Kremlin whistle-blower Voronenkov removes vital witness for Ukraine
24.03.2017
While it remains unproven who carried out the brazen killing of ex-Russian MP Denis Voronenkov in Kyiv on March 23 or why, it is certainly true that Ukraine has lost a valuable witness willing to give damaging testimony about ex-President Viktor Yanukovych and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Ukraine lawmaker calls on USA to investigate new ‘evidence’ of secret payments to Manafort
22.03.2017
Paul Manafort is under scrutiny again after a Ukrainian lawmaker released documents he says show that U.S. President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman went to great lengths to hide $750,000 tied to his work for former President Viktor Yanukovych.

Ukrainians say Putin must go & Donbas be freed for normalized relations with Russia
20.03.2017
Russia’s annexation of Crimea and military engagement in eastern Ukraine have taken their toll on Ukrainians’ attitude to relations between the two countries. According to a recent study, only 49% believe that a normalization of relations is possible in the distant future, while a mere one in ten believes a swift improvement is possible.
Children with Machine Guns & Russian Flags vs Shame & Protest at Russia’s Crimea Landgrab
19.03.2017
A performance with children dancing about with machine guns was one of the most shocking parts of the state-organized festivities in Russian-occupied Crimea for the 3rd anniversary of Russia’s annexation. Others marked the anniversary with opposition and shame
Russia now says it lied about Yanukovych letter used as pretext to send troops to Ukraine
17.03.2017
Three years after Russia’s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin read out a letter purportedly from Viktor Yanukovych asking Russia to send in troops to Ukraine, and almost a month after Churkin’s sudden death, the Kremlin is claiming it never received any letter
European Parliament demands Russia release Ukrainian hostages, slams human rights abuse in occupied Crimea
17.03.2017
An overwhelming majority of European parliamentarians have endorsed a hard-hitting Resolution condemning Russia’s occupation and repressive measures in occupied Crimea. The MEPs call for the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners held illegally in occupied Crimea and Russia, and stress that Russia has no right to be applying its legislation on occupied territory.
Poroshenko law could strip huge numbers of Ukrainians of their citizenship
16.03.2017
Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko has tabled as urgent a draft law which would automatically strip Ukrainians of their citizenship if they voluntarily took on citizenship of another country
Six Immediate Steps to Stop Putin’s Aggression
15.03.2017
With a few exceptions in the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, and recently in the Czech Republic, very few real counter-measures have been put into practice. Despite almost every Western intelligence agency urgently warning about the Russian threat, only a few Western leaders are ordering their security institutions to develop and implement robust strategies and policies against it.
E-Mail Hack Gives Glimpse Into Russia’s Influence Drive In Eastern Europe
13.03.2017
A recently hacked cache of documents indicates that Alyaksandr Usovsky’s activities include maintaining contact with Polish politician Mateusz Piskorski, a founder of a pro-Kremlin NGO that, among other things, organized this group of "international observers" to monitor the 2014 "referendum" in Crimea
Rights groups call for EU action in defence of democracy in Poland
02.03.2017
Polish and international human rights organizations have signed an open letter requesting the European Commission to launch the third stage of the rule of law procedure, which would mean the triggering of the measures under Article 7 of Treaty of the European Union.
UK university denies any part in Russia’s latest Crimea propaganda stunt
10.02.2017
Three UK academics specializing in military history are currently taking part in meetings and propaganda media shots in Russian-occupied Crimea. They appear to be promising a joint project with Bristol University which says that the men have nothing to do with them.
Russia uses collaborators at UN to deny its repression of Crimean Tatars
10.02.2017
Instead of returning Crimea or at least putting an end to grave human rights violations on the Ukrainian peninsula, Russia is pulling out (or even creating) marginal groups for use in stunts like the latest appeal by a marginal Crimean Tatar organization to the UN to recognize Crimea as Russian and lift sanctions
Six Outrageous Lies Russian Disinformation Peddled about Europe in 2016
10.02.2017
Russian disinformation is working overtime to undermine European democracies. Much of the disinformation in 2016 came from original Russian sources that presented poorly digested information designed to provoke and to push an agenda that the Kremlin finds favorable

08.02.2017
As US President Donald Trump introduces a new leadership style, political and economic crises play out in the EU, and tensions in Russia’s foreign and domestic affairs increase, the effects will be astutely felt in Ukraine—a country that has become a key battleground state in the confrontation between the world’s pro- and anti-Western forces
‘Ukrainian regional news site’ linked with Putin Chef’s Internet troll factory
07.02.2017
An apparently ‘Ukrainian’ website often quoted in the Russian media has a St. Petersburg address and is probably one of the ‘troll factory’ enterprises owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a millionaire often referred to as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s favourite chef.
‘Patriotic but Questionable” Language Laws Help Moscow, not Ukrainian Unity
06.02.2017
Three draft language laws tabled in Ukraine’s parliament have elicited mixed reactions in Ukraine and a predictable stream of fake news stories and deliberate misinformation from Russian and pro-Russian media
